The former students of the Technical University in Delft developed and patented the special coating in early September 2014. Grapperhuis and Kesteloo say they are talking to various contractors, project developers and architects. Glaziers and electrotechnical specialists are also extremely enthusiastic about applying the coating in practice. The intention is to place the first window in 2016 that generates energy.
How does the PowerWindow work?
A thin luminescent coating is applied to the glass surface. This layer absorbs both direct and indirect light and sends it to the sides of the window. The solar cell strips on the sides of the window ensure the conversion to electricity. The energy that you generate can then immediately be used in the household. Thanks to the coating, the heat radiation is also stopped, so that the PowerWindow also offers better insulation than a normal window.
Yield of the PowerWindow
Depending on the transparency of the coating, 25 to 40 percent of energy can be saved with the PowerWindow. The darker the coating the more energy is generated. The first windows that are developed annually generate around 50 kWh per square meter. An average solar panel generates 150 kWh per year, but takes up more space and is less multifunctional.
Application in practice
The PowerWindow is primarily interesting for renovation and new construction of office buildings. The power generated by the windows can then be used immediately by the computers and other devices in the building. For ordinary households the application seems less suitable, because here there is simply less framework available. On the other hand, the development is interesting for electric driving. The windows of the car can charge the battery while driving, increasing the driving range of the electric car.
What is the share of Climate-Technology-Solutions (C.T.S.)
We at Climate-Technology-Solutions (C.T.S.) are asked to develop the PowerWindow as an advisor. With the tests we have done, we can say that this year the PowerWindow will yield more efficiency than the 50 kWh per square meter per year. By means of an innovative adaptation, the PowerWindow can produce the double efficiency. More information will come later this year.
